Occlusal splint
An occlusal splint is a custom-made dental device through the use of 3D scanner technology that is used to treat a range of dental problems related to the bite and the jaw. It is a removable appliance that is typically worn on the upper or lower teeth, and is designed to protect the teeth from grinding or clenching, as well as to alleviate symptoms associated with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders and other conditions.
The splint is usually made of hard plastic and is molded to fit the individual's teeth and bite. It works by helping to align the jaw and teeth in a more comfortable and relaxed position, which can reduce muscle tension and relieve pain and discomfort associated with TMJ disorders, teeth grinding, and other dental problems.
Occlusal splints are often prescribed by dentists and orthodontists as a treatment option for a range of conditions, including bruxism (teeth grinding), temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD), and sleep apnea. The splint is typically worn at night, but may also be worn during the day if necessary.
If you are experiencing symptoms of a dental problem related to the bite or the jaw, such as pain, clicking, or popping in the jaw joint, headaches, or worn teeth, talk to your dentist or orthodontist about whether an occlusal splint may be right for you. They can evaluate your condition and determine whether a splint or other treatment option is necessary to help you achieve optimal dental health and comfort.
