Composite restorations

Composite restorations (fillings) are a tooth-coloured material used to repair teeth that have been damaged by decay or injury. They are made of a mixture of plastic and glass or ceramic particles that mimic the natural colour and texture of teeth.

Composite fillings offer several advantages over traditional silver amalgam fillings, including:

  1. Aesthetics: Composite fillings are designed to match the colour of your natural teeth, making them virtually invisible.

  2. Preservation of tooth structure: Composite fillings bond directly to the tooth, requiring less removal of healthy tooth structure than amalgam fillings.

  3. Durability: With proper care, composite fillings can last for many years.

  4. Resistance to temperature changes: Unlike amalgam fillings, composite fillings do not expand and contract with temperature changes, which can cause teeth to crack or fracture.

  5. No mercury: Composite fillings are free of mercury, a toxic substance found in silver amalgam fillings.

Composite fillings are typically placed in one appointment. The dentist will remove the decayed or damaged portion of the tooth and clean the area. The composite filling material is then applied in layers and cured with a special light to harden it. After the filling is complete, the dentist will polish it to give it a smooth, natural-looking finish.

While composite fillings are a great option for restoring damaged teeth, they may not be suitable for all cases. Your dentist will evaluate your individual needs and recommend the best treatment option for you.
